Star Theatre : A historical past & a glorious Future. 125 years' celebration of Star Theatre ::

Indian Theatre is as old as the history of the country & its culture . Kolkata which happens to be the cultural hub of the country, played a great role in shaping the literary heritage of India . And with the setting up of the star theatre, Bengali Theatre gained a great dead of contemporary diction .


In the year 1888, May 25 Star Theatre started its journey for promoting theatre with pride .It witnessed the presence of many social icons & great personalities like Sri Sri Ramkrishna Paramhansadeva & Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore who sat in the first row as spectator to watch the plays.In this stage Swami Vivekananda conveyed a public meeting to introduce Margaret Noble, lately known as sister Nivedita. Star Theatre gave birth to a number of potential talents. All the well known directors , actors, actress, lightmen were all parts of this historical theatre house. Renowned actors of that like Girish Ghosh, Noti Binodini, Sarajubala, Sisir Bhaduri,Dani Mitra to modern age actors like Uttam Kumar, Soumitra Chatterjee, Gita Dey, Madhavi Mukerjee, Savitri Chatterjee performed at this famous Theatre .


However Star Theatre which was the centre stage of Bengali culture till 1991 was completely destroyed by fire. But in Oct 13, 2004 this heritage Theatre House was re-opened by KMC with a renovated look.


Later this year The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has undertaken the Star Theatre & celebrated its 125th turning year on May 25, 2012.


The event at Star Theatre was remarkable as it felicitated the veteran flim and stage actress Savitri Chatterjee who staged here the drama 'Shyamali' at a stretch 468 nights with renowned actor Uttam Kumar.


Riddhi & Debojit Banerjee presented Drama Songs to the audience.


The occasion was graced by the presence of Hon'ble Central Health Minister Sri Sudip Banerjee, Hon'ble Mayor of Kolkata Sri Sovan Chatterjee, MMIC (Education) Dr. Shashi Panja, MMIC (Health) Dr. Partha Pratim Hazari, MMIC(Health & Bustee) Atin Ghosh & many other dignitaries .


125 year ago, the social play 'Nasiram'by Girishchandra was staged at this theatre as its first play.Today again by staging of this play the renovated Star Theatre started its voyage for glorious golden future to come.
